The unthinkable has happened -- again. A terrorist strike on a major New York City landmark leaves behind an aftermath of death and destruction. Caught at ground zero is NYPD detective Jack Keller who barely escapes with his life. His longtime friend and former partner is not as lucky. Keller vows to bring the terrorist mastermind behind the strike to justice. He tracks him down in a global manhunt. Yet unknown to Keller time is running out.

His quarry is gearing up for the boldest terrorist attack in history. Iran has given terrorists a theater nuclear missile in a bid to out-do the death toll on 911. If successful the doomsday plan will unleash a nuclear nightmare on millions of victims and set the stage for worse to come. In the end everything hinges on a hard-as-nails New York police detective who stakes his life in a global chase after the terrorist chieftain he's determined to bring to justice no matter what or who he has to sacrifice in order to do it.

The action scenes in Paris and Venice are gripping and move faster than greased lightning, giving the impression that Alexander knows every back street, hidden ally and public square, every public monument and off-the-beaten-path corner of these European cities, and also knows just which elements to use in his masterfully conceived and boldly executed plot.

The dark narrative tapestry of Chain Reaction also places this thriller squarely amid the select ranks of classic hardboiled fiction. This is a contemporary thriller, though, and one in which Alexander manages to mix successfully an intricate plot with exotic locales, a considerable amount of action, and solid characters. Chain reaction is a thriller fan's dream; exciting, involving, thought-provoking. All in all, a first-class tale of intrigue by one of the top authors in the field.

Tightly plotted and paced, and completely enthralling. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Top International Chase and Global Manhunt Fiction. This One's A Hit!, April 10, 2010 This review is from: Chain Reaction (Kindle Edition) This is one of those books that come along from time to time that just grab you and pull you forward. I found myself comparing it to Hammet's The Maltese Falcon in that it featured a character who was driven to go to the limits, and even beyond the limits, in order to make sure that justice was done.

I think I can honestly rate Chain Reaction as having a place on the short list of the best hardboiled thrillers. Plus this is is also an action thriller in the spy category as well.

I think one of the things that hooked me right away was that in a world where a real terrorist mastermind who was behind one of the worst atrocities in history, authorities continue brushing bin Laden off as "a little terrorist," when we all know that capturing him and making him face the music would have tremendous impact.

In Chain Reaction, the same bureaucratic indifference to the capture of Vanesco, a terrorist in the same league as bin Laden, also becomes the gospel of officialdom, and the cop sent to bring him back to New York to face justice realizes that he's just been used as as pawn in a political game by high-ups who don't care about the lives affected by the terrorist attack.

Here, unlike the case so often in reality, one guy defies everybody and everything, risking his life to go after and apprehend a master assassin who controls squads of terrorists across Europe. Detective Lieutenant Jack Keller is just not going to quit while still alive. You've got to kill him to stop him, and even after being shot, Keller pushes on, not willing to give in or give up. It was very satisfying to find that justice was meted out in the end to the organizer of mass murder, and by one of the terrorist's victims who'd been present at ground zero.

Keller's character, and the plot of Chain Reaction, also compares very favorably with police dramas on TV these days. I'd like to see Chain Reaction made into a movie, made-for-cable, or first-run. For now, at least, we've got this book.

Highly Recommended!, June 26, 2010 This review is from: Chain Reaction (Kindle Edition) This international manhunt thriller was good to the last drop. Didn't miss a trick. Checked all the boxes and crossed all the t's. Kept me interested as the fast-paced storyline rolled like thunder. The suspense built to a fever pitch, and then there was that great ending with its really clever twist. One damn fine book.
